EGEN supports ProRail with successful LIFE application for nature-friendly vegetation removal along railway tracks

The new call of the European LIFE programme has been opened in April. LIFE is the European Union’s funding instrument for projects focused on nature, environment, climate, and the energy transition. It offers a unique opportunity to turn innovative and sustainable ideas into reality.

LIFE provides a wide range of opportunities for realising sustainable projects. A great example of what is possible with LIFE is ProRail’s NATURE-RAIL project. In 2023, EGEN supported ProRail in successfully applying for LIFE funding for this initiative. NATURE-RAIL focuses on developing environmentally friendly methods for removing vegetation on and alongside railway tracks, as an alternative to the use of harmful glyphosate. The project aims to reduce the ecological impact of railway maintenance while maintaining infrastructure safety.

Sustainable rail management: Innovative alternatives without harmful substances

To ensure the safety of passengers and railway workers, and to guarantee reliable railway operations, vegetation on and alongside tracks must be regularly removed. In many parts of Europe, this is still done using glyphosate, a substance with harmful effects on the environment and biodiversity. With NATURE-RAIL, ProRail aims to explore and test innovative, nature-friendly alternatives that are just as effective but significantly less harmful to the environment.

LIFE as a catalyst for sustainable projects

The process of applying for LIFE funding helped to quickly clarify the various components of the project. It required the project team to critically reflect on objectives, techniques, partners, and timelines, according to ProRail. The application process encouraged clear choices and a more concrete project plan. In this way, LIFE not only provides funding, but also acts as a valuable framework and motivational driver that strengthens both the organisation and content of the project.

From funding application to implementation: Innovations in practice

The aim of the NATURE-RAIL project is to develop innovative alternatives for vegetation management on and directly along railway tracks, without the use of chemical substances. Since the project’s start in October 2023, the first results have already emerged. Three innovative techniques are currently being tested and further developed:

  • Electric weeding (e-weeding): Electric weeding is a sustainable method of weed control using electric current to damage plant cells, preventing regrowth. This technique has been tested at several locations and has proven to be both effective and safe. Testing will continue for another 1 to 2 years, while scaling-up efforts are already underway in collaboration with contractors.
  • Cryogenic weed control: This method involves freezing vegetation using extremely low-temperature nitrogen, causing it to die off. The design of the new cryogenic installation has been completed and construction has been approved.
  • Slow-growing grass tracks: By planting low-maintenance grass species and herb mixtures, combined with an autonomous mowing machine, trackside vegetation management becomes more efficient. At various sites, including the Railcenter in Amersfoort, seeds have been sown that contribute both to soil restoration and to enhancing biodiversity.

European collaboration for broader impact

NATURE-RAIL is not just a Dutch initiative — it has also sparked broader European cooperation. ProRail is working together with Infrabel (the Belgian railway infrastructure manager) and the international railway platform UIC. During meetings in Brussels and Paris, knowledge was shared on sustainable railway solutions, helping to build strong networks and creating opportunities to replicate successful project results across Europe. In the coming years, the tested techniques will also be demonstrated in Belgium by Infrabel.

EGEN as partner in the application process

The LIFE application process was experienced by the project team as intensive but highly valuable. With EGEN’s guidance, ProRail received targeted support in structuring the project, drafting a detailed budget, and aligning the proposal with the objectives and requirements of the LIFE programme.

Are you working on a sustainable project too? The new LIFE call opens soon!

Do you want to work on a nature or climate project with European support, just like ProRail? Then now is the time to take action. The new LIFE call has been published on 24 April. EGEN is happy to support you — from strategy to successful submission.
